Duo:1 - Coffee Table

In a sea of derivative modern furniture, Duo imagines a series of home furnishings realigned to the study of materials and their various cutting edge manufacturing processes, much as the early modernists did at the Bauhaus when the icons of design that mark the 20th century were developed.

Duo creates internal spatial drama from a sheet metal tripod base and a transparent glass top.  While sheet metal has historically been used for ductwork, flashing and exterior wall panels in the building industries, Duo focuses on its use in the Automotive Design.  Here at first it was pounded, bent and welded around a wood formwork know as a ‘buck’, in order to produce the curves and lines that have made such masterworks as the Aston Martin DB5 and the Birdcage Masterati. Industry innovation soon led to the more commonplace panel stamping that has been responsible for virtually all of the vehicles on the road, but  today Porsche utilizes a process called ‘drawing’ which utilizes tooling that forms the metal in situ. Drawing technology pushes the limits of the sheet material (thinness) while simultaneously strengthening it (internal stresses).

Duo is a simple pairing of materials for this century.
